I think that the sunglasses were a tad overused for conveying that 'sense' of belonging/happiness that the protagonist seems to have lost.

Yeah, but around here you get a tan without even trying. Sunglasses aren't just cool, you really need them year-round. They become part of you.

Max - LA is still very much a city. NY is just more claustrophobic...
